Diols and Polyol
Improving the standards of polyurethanes and providing better strength and flexibility.
Introduction to Diols and Polyol
DIOL includes 3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol (MPD) and 1,9-nonanediol (ND). The products are manufactured using unique synthesis technology developed by Kuraray. We offer a range of polyester polyols and polycarbonate polyols from these diols, marketed under the brand Kuraray POLYOL.
Types of Diols
Diols are a group of chemical compounds important in developing various industrial materials. They are characterised by having two hydroxyl groups, which make them versatile intermediates in polymer synthesis. Here are two specific diols—3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol (MPD) and 1,9-nonanediol (ND) each with unique properties.
3-Methyl-1,5-pentanediol (MPD)
A colourless liquid that is easy to handle due to its low viscosity and is resistant to water damage. MPD is flexible and transparent, making it a key component in the manufacturing of durable polyurethanes.
1,9-Nonanediol (ND)
This white solid substance is notable for its hydrolysis resistance and a suitable level of crystallinity. ND is used to several type of chemical susbstances for the applicability in agro, indsutrial intermediates, etc.

Keys Characteristics
- Resistance to Hydrolysis: Diols offer excellent resistance to hydrolysis, ensuring that they maintain their integrity and performance even when exposed to water. The resistance is crucial for the longevity and durability of materials that operate in moist or wet environments.
- Low Viscosity in Liquid State: The diols are easy to handle because they flow easily at room temperature. It makes them convenient to work with in manufacturing processes.
- Wide Compatibility: These diols are highly compatible with a range of other polyols, including both polyester and polyether types. This compatibility is essential for formulating complex polymers that meet specific performance criteria for various industrial applications.
- Better Softness: The MPD diol imparts superior softness to polymers, making it an ideal component for products that require a comfortable feel, such as synthetic fabrics, and for flexible coatings that can withstand bending and flexing without cracking.
